What is the NSPPP/Metro program?

The North Shore Premier Player Program (NSPPP) is a player development program for U13-U18 boys that live in the North Shore Youth Soccer Association (NSYSA) district. They compete in the British Columbia Youth Select Soccer League (BCYSSL) which is the top level of boys soccer competition for the Lower Mainland Youth teams.

NSPPP teams are more selective and more competitive than Club Select teams; they are intended for boys with the highest level of skill who are looking for the highest level of competition for their age group. They also include quite a bit more travel for games, as all non-home games are off the North Shore. (Alouette, Burnaby, Delta, Fraser Valley, Lower Island, North Shore, Richmond, Surrey Metro, Upper Island, Vancouver, and Westminster) The cost for NSPPP participation is significantly higher than for Club Select teams.

What age groups are eligible for NSPPP/Metro?

The NSPPP fields teams at U14, U16 and U18.  Typically there will be a Div 1 & Div 2 team selected each year but that number can vary depending on the talent pool in any given year and the structure of the BCYSSL Players at U13, U15 and U17 are encouraged to try out for the team one year above their age group.

How do interested boys get evaluated for the NSPPP?

Player evaluation camps for these age groups take place during the preceding March-April; all players wishing to play must attend the evaluation camps, unless they have been exempted from attendance by the NSPPP Committee on the advice of the head coach of the NSSDC. Further exceptions to ID camp attendance will be considered where there are medical or other reasons not under the control of the player. Selection into NSPPP is based mainly on demonstrated skill, commitment, and player development potential. Continued participation by a player in the NSPPP will be dependent upon continued commitment to the program and a continuing excellent attitude and commitment level.

Whitecaps 2009/2010 Prospects Program
Player Evaluation Information

Dear Club Technical Directors/Head Coaches;

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC is pleased to release the program details and player evaluation information for the 2009-2010 Prospects Program.  Prospects programming will be offered to the U11 (1999-born), U12, (1998-born), U13 (1997-born) and U17/18 (1992/1993-born) age groups

The Vancouver Whitecaps Prospects program is a 10-month high performance development program that is comprised of two streams (full time and part time programs) that are delivered in two-phases;  October to the end of July each year.  The Prospects program provides opportunity for players to train and compete in a high performance environment and to be coached by professional Whitecaps FC staff.

Player Evaluation/Identification Process

Entrance into the Whitecaps Prospects Program is by INVITATION only (evaluation schedule/information at the link below).

Evaluation/Identification of Whitecaps FC Prospects Full-Time Player Program (U17/18)

Players selected for the Prospects Full-Time Player Program will be invited by the Whitecaps FC on an annual basis and will play as a full time Whitecaps youth player. (see below for more info)

Players invited into this program are done so based on an ongoing evaluation process through National Training Centre, Provincial Teams Program, District Development Centre, Regional Program and Club team performance monitoring.

There will not be any “open” evaluations/trials available for this program.

Evaluation/Identification of Whitecaps FC Prospects Program (U11, U12 and U13)

The Vancouver Whitecaps will be hosting a series of player evaluation and identification camps for the Under 11, Under 12 and Under 13 Prospects program in September 2009.

The “OPEN” sessions are for any aspiring Prospects player to attend.  Players who are considering attending an Evaluation/Identification camp should understand that this is a high performance program and, as such, should ensure that they meet the following criteria prior to registration:

·         The player has a high degree of skill and the ability to apply that skill in a game setting

·         The player is athletically fit and hardworking

·         The player possesses a passion for the game and aspires to become the best player, person and athlete possible

·         The player and parents can fully commit to 2-3 additional training sessions each week, on top of other commitments, especially community club soccer.

At the completion of the Invitational Evaluation sessions club Head Coaches/Technical Directors will be notified of the players from their respective clubs that have been identified for invitation to the Whitecaps Prospects Program. This information will be released, by email to you, on September 25, 2009. We respectfully request that Head Coaches/Technical Directors endorse our recommendations, at which point players will receive an invitation to the Fall Prospects program.

Given the time constraints between the completion of the evaluation process and the start of the program, we would appreciate a timely response once the invitation list is email.

Club Technical Directors/Head Coaches are asked for their cooperation with the distribution of the Prospects program information and Evaluation/Identification schedule to any potential Prospects players within your Club.

U16/U18 Academy Program

Dear Club Technical Directors and Head Coaches;

Following several inquiries, I wanted to provide some more information regarding the U16/U18 Academy program that the Vancouver Whitecaps will be running for the 2009-10 season.

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC Academy is an invitation only 20-week program aimed at offering boys and girls at the U18 age (1992 and 1993) and U16 age (1994 and 1995).

The rationale for this program is based on the premise that most Community Clubs do not offer Academy programming for older youth players.  The intention of the Academy is not to conflict with players’ Community Club soccer commitments. Invited players are strongly encouraged to discuss the situation with their club team coach and club Technical Director/Head Coach to ensure that participation in the Whitecaps FC Academy is not a problem.

Invitation Process

Players have been invited into this program based on the following criteria:

1. Club Team evaluation through the Whitecaps FC Regional Showcases

2. WFC Regional Programming / BC Soccer District Development Centre network

3. Evaluation of players in BC Soccer / WFC / CSA ‐ NTC High Performance Programming

4. Academy Trial – on player recommendation from Club Head Coaches/Technical Directors

Schedule

The Academy program is divided into two (2) separate sessions:

Phase #1 (Week 1‐10): Monday, September 14, 2009 – Monday, November 23, 2009

Phase #2 (Week 11‐20): Monday, January 25, 2010 – Monday, March 29, 2010

Training will take place on the following days/times:

U16 Boys and Girls

Monday’s – 7:00‐8:30pm

U18 Boys and Girls

Monday’s – 8:30‐10:00pm

Kind Regards,

U14 Burrards Twice Tournament Champs

The U14 Burrards took 1st place at the 2008 Wesburn Labour-Day Tournament at Riverway in Burnaby in September. This was a well-organised tournament in which the Burrards won 3 of 4 games.

In October, the U14 Burrards took another 1st, this time at the 2008 Thanksgiving Tournament in Port Coquitlam. Another well-organised tournament, the final match proved to be a landmark for the undefeated Burrards. They came out after half-time, and in pouring rain, to dominate the match and win 5-1, even the goalie got the ball in the net (disallowed due to offside).

Congratulations to our U14 Burrards players and coaches!

Letter from the President
Welcome to a new season---Letter from the Pres

Last year Larry Wilson stepped down as president after many years service to the club.  He remained on the board throughout last year as "past president"and the club ran for a year without a president.  Larry had given theboard plenty of warning that he would be retiring when his son graduated from the club.  He even stayed on an extra year after that as we had no one who was prepared to take the role from him.  This year, the team I was coaching reached U18, had a great year (we won the division) and graduated.  So I agreed to take on the job (President).  But what I realised was that we are having a really hard time getting volunteers in Lions Gate.  I have been trying to work out why and one reason may be because (to quote Andrea Agnoloni our tech Director) Lions Gate is an association which administers 113 teams.  Administration is not much fun. We started out as a soccer club.  Being a part of a club should have a "feel good" factor. A club is where you meet new people and build friendships. A club is a place where you get together with like minded people and talk about the issues, concerns and successes of the club.  I believe that we should be a club, not an administration.

I plan to be president for two years - after that my sons will both have graduated.  In that period I want to change the feeling and culture at Lions Gate - I want to leave you with a soccer club, which everyone feels part of.  I believe that if we enjoy being in Lions Gate club, enjoy the friendships and the support we get from others, we will understand why we need to help out and take on roles within the club - either helping with team management, Whitecaps nights, jamborees etc or on the board or in board support - such as Age Group Coordinator.  But - it is a two pronged approach - I am working with the board to simplify the roles.  It is not fair or reasonable to expect volunteers to work for 10 years, 5 nights a week supporting the club.

My first attempts at drawing the club together have been "Pizza with the president" evenings - I have held three of these at the Horseshoe club. One for the Age Group Coordinators, one for the Referee Assigners and one for Select team coaches.  I have heard from many of you at these meetings about what you would like the club to be and what you need from the club.  We also had a very successful U11/12 mini tournament in June where coaches from that age group were able to get together and share ideas.  Watch out for emails inviting you to these events - they are fun, we won't use them to recruit you. We just want to hear from the membership, and make sure the membership feels heard.

Finally - some club results.  We had a great year this year we had teams from our club win eight divisional titles.  Congratulations to: U12 Lions, U12 Stealth, U12 Raiders, U15 Lightning, U15 Cougars , U16 Burrard, U17 Eagles and my team - U18 Wanderers.

Please send me your feedback - to Nickhawley@shaw.ca.

Talk to you next month.
