Introduction:
Most soccer clubs organize select teams as their lead representatives in inter-club competition. Being selected to these teams depends on both the player's technical skill and his ability to participate effectively as a team member. The selection process takes place after the end of regular season play and is open to all age-level players. Select teams are organized for the U-11 through U-18 age levels.
The North Vancouver Lions Gate Soccer Association "NVLGSA" typically has up to 3 select teams known as Capilano, Burrard and Lions for U-13 to U-18. The Capilanos are typically the most competitive select team followed by the Burrards, and if warranted the Lions. Select teams in U-12 Super 8 format differs in team names. These team names are reserved for the Club’s select gold and silver teams. The names were chosen in recognition of the First Nations heritage of our community. 'Capilano' and 'Burrard' are names strongly associated with our neighbourhood and remind us of Chief Joseph Capilano of the Squamish nation and the Burrard Indian Band. Chief Capilano was the first West Coast chief to travel to England and was a staunch supporter of his people’s rights. Tsleil-Waututh, as the Burrard are also known, means ‘people of the inlet’. The ‘Lions’ are simply named after the famous and magnificent ‘Lions’ seen on the North Shore mountains.
NVLGSA requires the U-12 to U-18 select teams to enter Provincial A Cup or Provincial B Cup competition, the highest levels of competition for youth soccer in BC, to seek Provincial Championship status on behalf of the Club.
Good luck to all participants.

Club Vision:
The North Vancouver Lions Gate Soccer Association "NVLGSA" has established a player evaluation policy which strives to allows it’s players to attempt to qualify for select teams in an environment that is open, honest, professional and transparent.
The evaluation process gives consideration to a player’s skill level, athletic ability, and playing ability. A player and his parents/guardians should consider the attitude required as well as the time and effort commitment involved with a select team.
The NVLGSA has developed and continually evolves a select team policy that gives all NVLGSA players the opportunity, if they wish, to play at the highest level at which they are capable. Since the ultimate decision rests with the player we strongly encourage coaches, parents and players to consider the above statement before evaluation camps begin.
Select Team Policy:
1. Select Team Formation
Select teams are currently formed through an evaluation camp process.
Except under the following circumstances and as set out below:
Players wishing to participate in evaluation camps and who are unable to attend all of the sessions, must notify the executive in writing as soon as possible in advance of their evaluation camp date. The only acceptable excuses will be injury, illness, school or religious functions. An appropriate letter or note from a doctor, school principal, or a religious leader must accompany all such notifications.
A copy of the letter, or note, must be delivered to the Technical Director two (2) weeks prior to the commencement of the first evaluation camp date for the player’s age group.
Provided that the reason for non-attendance are acceptable, the Technical Director, one independent NVLGSA board member, and the NSSDC Head Coach will then decide on a proper method of evaluation. In the event that the Technical director has a conflict of interest with the age then the deputy technical director will step in to manage the process.
If no method of evaluation is available in that time frame, the player will not be placed on a select team. Injury and illness excuses will be accepted prior to and including the evaluation camp period.
Players injured or ill during the evaluation camp period may be considered for selection if they have participated in a previous select evaluation camp and have been evaluated by their previous Coach, the NVLGSA technical director and the NSSDC head coach, or a combination of the two.
The NVLGSA Board may place a player on a select team any time up to the deadline for transfer according to BCSA Rules (Rule 7 - Player Transfers), where exceptional circumstances exist. A player will only be placed on a team if that team has less than 18 players. NVLGSA Board may also require an independent evaluation of a player to determine the player’s level of play.
No select team shall be formed if a minimum of 12 players for U-12 to U-18 rated at select level cannot be found. Also, if there are fewer than 20 players involved in an evaluation camp, then at the discretion of the board, with input from the evaluators, a select team may not be formed. The remaining players are dispersed onto existing teams or form a new team.
2. Player Registration
In order to be eligible to compete for a position on a select NVLGSA soccer team, a player must be registered with NVLGSA and may not be concurrently registered with another soccer club. Every player must pay the evaluation camp fee. This fee must be paid prior to entering the field of play on the first day of evaluation camps.
3. Eligible Age
The “U” in U-12 to U-18 refers to “under”. U-12 is the under 12 year old player category in the first year of the season. A player may not be more than one year less in age than the category nor the same age or older than the category in the first year of the season. For example, a player with his 14th birthday in 2007 is eligible to participate in the U-15 evaluation camp for the 2007/2008 season in the NVLGSA.
Currently, all NVLGSA U-12 to U-18 teams play in the 4 District Soccer League. This league membership includes the North Shore, Vancouver, Burnaby and Richmond. North Shore teams can range as far as the Sunshine Coast and Whistler.
4. Number of Select Teams
The NVLGSA board of directors determines the number of select teams to be formed for an age group for one season.
11 Versus 11 Format Teams:
11 V. 11 format teams are the U-13 to U-18 teams. NVLGSA may select two teams at each age level and where deemed viable by a team of independent evaluators, a third team may be formed subject to approval by the board of directors. All select teams are expected to be able to perform competitively at the Silver 1 level or above.
NVLGSA will name its most competitive team the "Capilano". The "Burrard" name shall be assigned to either the second gold team or Silver 1 level team. If warranted, a third team called ‘Lions’ and a fourth team called the “Whitecaps” may be assigned to Silver 1.
Super 8 Format Teams:
The Super 8 format is new for the 2007/2008 season. NVLGSA may organize three select teams at the U-12 age level. When deemed viable by a team of independent evaluators, one or two more teams may be formed subject to approval by the board of directors. All select teams are expected to be able to perform at a select level comparable to other districts.
NVLGSA will name its Super 8 select teams in descending order, Capilano, Burrard, Lions and Whitecaps.
5. Select Program Information Package and Fees
An information package, which also includes an evaluation camp invitation, and dates will be sent out to all registered players in February. An evaluation camp Pre-registration Form will also be sent at the same time. In order to cover costs associated with the evaluation camp process, there will be a fee for all players who attend evaluation camps. This fee shall be set at the November or December NVLGSA board meeting. This fee must be paid prior to the first day of evaluation camp.
6. Select Team Camp Evaluators.
The NVLGSA board is responsible for approval of all select team camp evaluators.
The evaluator to player ratio shall ideally be 1 evaluator per 10-12 players.
The evaluation team may consist of:
- 1/3 professional evaluators.
- 1/3 independent evaluators from outside the club.
- 1/3 evaluators are successful select team coach candidates or selected evaluators from different age groups within the NVLGSA.
The NVLGSA in cooperation with the North Shore Soccer Development Center (NSSDC) recommendations will recruit or hire independent evaluators for each age group.
Currently through the "club development" programs the NSSDC has the opportunity to evaluate the club coaches. The NSSDC endeavors to form a pool of up to 50 coaches from NVLGSA, Lynn Valley Soccer Club (LVSC) and North Shore Girls Soccer Club (NSGSC), it sees as following the general North Shore Soccer philosophy of player development. This pool would make itself available to all clubs to act as outside independent evaluators.
During the course of the season our soccer development partners at the NSSDC will have the benefit of working with all NVLGSA, LVSC and NSGSC club coaches through the "team development sessions". This provides the all the north shore clubs with a professional evaluation of it’s coaches, in particular the ones who show commitment and belief in working within the North Shores general philosophy of player development. The NSSDC will monitor coaches within the clubs and compile a list of coaches from all clubs who show competency in the player evaluation. This pool of evaluators will give LGSC the ability to draw competent coaches for its "independent evaluator" category.
Club officials, including Technical Directors, Deputy Technical Directors, Age Group Coordinators, Independent evaluators or otherwise shall not be deemed to have "a real or perceived conflict of interest" with the age group they are evaluating. The Technical Director will submit the list of qualified independent evaluators for board approval. Independent evaluators must hold a minimum of Community Senior Coaching certification and a minimum 5 years of related coaching experience. Every effort shall be made to recruit independent evaluators.
Under no circumstance shall independent evaluators come from one source.
Each Select Team Coach will have the option of carrying a 17th player for U-13 to U-18 or a 13th player for U-12 if that selection is their son. This provision is necessary to ensure the best possible coaching candidate is selected.
7. The Age Group Coordinators
The roles of Age Group Coordinators at select team evaluation camps.
If the Age Group Coordinator has a real or perceived conflict of interest within the group of players trying out, (such as a son or close relative) then they will be asked not to be involved with any on field activities, evaluations or player selection.
Drill coaches may be recruited from the parents or coaches of the age group of the participating players.
8. Select Team Evaluation Camp Dates
U-12 and U-13 initial evaluation camps are normally completed by late March to early April.
U-14 to U-18 initial evaluation camps shall normally be completed in the April to June timeframe.

Players will be informed on their successful qualification within 48 hours after the end of the evaluation camp.
The Age Group Coordinator will notify the remainder of the players that they will be placed on their team from the previous year or a new team formed as a result of the selection process.

Therefore, applicants are encouraged to contact their Age Group Coordinator or another member of the evaluation committee by no later than January 31 to indicate their interest in a coaching position. Applicants must submit their resume outlining their coaching experience, qualifications and coaching philosophy to the Technical Director by February 14 for the upcoming season.

The Technical Director will evaluate the circumstances and assess the player taking into consideration available players on the final selection list.
Players on a select team who do not show team commitment - by missing practices or games, or by demonstrating behavior that is not supportive to the team, may be moved to a non-select team. The select team coaches may make recommendations to the Technical Director who shall report to the NVLGSA board to make the final determinations.
15. Youth to Youth Transfers
In order to create a squad situation, movement between the select teams up to January is permitted under the 4 District Soccer League Youth to Youth transfer policies. The NVLGSA will cover the transfer costs for these moves. A player may have up to 5 transfers in a season for regular season games only. No transfers are permitted for any cup tournament games.
Youth to Youth transfers are designed as a tool to aid in player development and select team coaches are urged to make use of them.
Select Player Commitment
This section is intended to provide the criteria and expectations of being a select team player. Please read this information along with your parents.
Being a select team player not only requires skill, but also a strong commitment to the sport of soccer as well as your team. There is an expression in select soccer that says "Skill got you here, attitude will keep you here"
So, what does it take to be a select team player?
· You must have a high degree of skill and a proven level of achievement at soccer, demonstrated throughout the past playing year and at the evaluation camps.
· Select team players will practice a minimum of twice a week and be available for all games, cup competition as well as any tournaments your team may enter.
· Select team players may be encouraged to attend additional soccer training sessions, team practices as well as exhibition games.
· Select U12 & U13 team players shall be invited to participate in the North Shore Premier Player Program (NSPPP) ID Camps. If selected, there will be one training session each week and possibly an extra game on the weekend every two weeks (not to conflict with league and/or cup games) in addition to your select team schedule.
· You must share the enthusiasm and commitment of your fellow teammates in prioritizing your soccer commitments. Any known conflicts that will prevent you from participating in team activities on a recurring basis should be discussed with your current coach, and be taken into consideration as part of your decision to attend evaluation camps.
· Select team players require the attitude to excel by working hard during the training sessions, preparing themselves mentally for the task and learn to understand the level of their physical and mental form.
Please remember that there is an opportunity to attend evaluation camps every season. Regardless of where you end up in soccer, it is a wonderful sport to play. North Vancouver Lions Gate Soccer wishes you a very enjoyable season playing "The Beautiful Game."
